We have a 5 year old son with Autism. When he was 3 1/2 & still not potty trained (or diagnosed with autism yet) I decided I needed to really get tough & I had a week of what I called "Potty Training Boot Camp". I set a timer every 20 minutes & had him sit on the potty chair (kicking & screaming most of the time). He really loves trains, so a new train to add to his collection was a good incentive. (Not every time he went - we'd go broke!) By the end of the week he was doing really well. I let up on the timer thing & tried to just see how it went from there. In time it reversed. Little did I know that the timed intervals were working because he had Autism & a routine schedule like that was the key. Since he was diagnosed, we've started using a picture schedule, one of the pictures being a toilet & labeled "Toilet Time". He is pretty much completely trained now, with only a few accidents (he tends to wait as long as possible, doing a wild "potty dance" in the meantime, but hey, he's strengthening those bladder muscles, right?) & he does still wet at night. But I can handle that. I guess I would recommend a picture schedule like our son uses if you don't already.
Best Wishes!

I would try reinforcement with a reward. I use potty training rewards to potty train our son. The audio push button and chocolate treat were powerful incenitves to fully potty train him. I showed him the button he could push after going in his potty hearing he is a Big Boy and that then he could open a door to find a chocolate really made him become involved. He was peeing in his potty the first day. After the fourth day he only had a couple accidents. By the end of two weeks we was peeing and pooping in his potty. I let him open one door for pee and two for poo. Maybe this could work for your son. Have a look and see what you think. www.potttytrainingrewards.com

Potty training nightmare!!!

I need help potty training my 4 year old son. He's autistic and I can seem to find the right way to start potty training!!! I bought him a Potty Training Set that comes with a DVD and a little toilet, sink and a little bear with pants. It has the toilet sound and everything but I can't make him understand what to do when he gets the feeling he has to go potty. I feel a little frustrated because he's 4 and still wears diapers and pull-ups. What can I do?!!! ? ?:|
